Legislation Committees

Public Employee Committee

The PEC is the largest of the State Federation’s policy committees and currently consists of approximately 60 public employee union representatives whose unions are affiliated with the State Federation. The main purpose of the PEC is to review bills effecting public employees, to make recommendations for a legislative and political agenda, and to coordinate lobbying activities. PEC meetings are also an opportunity for elected officials, administration officials and other invited guest speakers to attend to discuss various issues. The PEC is also a forum for State Federation officers and employees to brief committee members on activities and policy and political developments which effect their membership.

Typical issues discussed at PEC meetings are public job growth and retention, organizing, fighting privatization, subcontracting and outsourcing initiatives and legislation enhancing public worker benefits.

The Committee meets on the dates below at 10:00 a.m., at the NJ State AFL-CIO office located at 106 West State Street, Trenton, New Jersey. Health Advisory Affairs Committee

The HAAC consists of approximately 40 union representatives whose unions are affiliated with the State Federation. The membership of the HAAC is comprised not only of union officials who have membership in the health care field, but also for all other unions that are concerned with health care policy and health insurance issues.

The main purpose of the HAAC is to review bills impacting health care workers and health care policy and insurance matters and to make recommendations for a legislative and political agenda on these issues. HAAC meetings also are a forum where elected officials, administration officials and other guest speakers may come to discuss various health care issues. HAAC meetings offer the State Federation officers and employees an opportunity to brief Committee members on activities and health care policy developments.

Typical issues discussed at the HAAC are prescription drugs, health care worker organizing opportunities, health care staffing issues, health insurance availability and cost and health insurance mandates.

Building Trades Committee

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO works in conjunction with the NJ State Building and Construction Trades Council (President William Mullen, Iron Workers Local 11) on legislative and political affairs. Service and Industrial Committee

The membership of the Service and Industrial Committee consists of union representatives whose unions are affiliated with the NJ State AFL-CIO and have who have members employed in the Service and Industrial sectors. The following unions are included in the Committee: Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM); International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); Graphic Communications International Union (GCIU); International Union of Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers (GMP); Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees International Union (HERE); International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF); International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA); International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine and Furniture Workers-Communications Workers of America (IUE-CWA); International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE); International Association of Machinists (IAM); United Mine Workers of America (UMWA); International Union of Allied Novelty and Production Workers; PACE International Union; Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU); Service Employees International Union (SEIU); United Steelworkers of America (USWA); Teamsters (IBT); International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW); Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE!); United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). Representatives of all affiliated unions concerned with the decline of manufacturing in New Jersey and other related issues affecting service and industrial workers are invited to become members.

The Service and Industrial Committee aims to revitalize manufacturing by building on the collective strength of industrial unions through joint strategies for creating and maintaining manufacturing jobs. The agenda of the Committee is to review Federal and State legislation impacting service and industrial workers and to achieve trade, dollar and tax policies that recognize workers' rights, and make recommendations for a legislative and political agenda on these issues. Committee meetings offer the State Federation officers and staff an opportunity to brief Committee members on related activities and policy developments.
